How to insert contact lenses

Inserting your contact lenses has never been easier! While just the idea might, in the beginning, be daunting for first-time contact lens wearers, we have carefully developed this handy step-by-step guide to putting in contact lenses with instructions that are easy to follow.

  • Step 1

Step 1: Wash and dry your hands well and remove your contact lens from its case or package

To reduce the risk of any infections or harmful substances entering your eye, you must wash your hands thoroughly and dry them with a clean towel before handling your contact lenses.

If you are suffering from dry eye discomfort, eye drops for dry eyes provide instant soothing relief by moisturizing and hydrating your eyes. Vision Direct stocks a wide selection of eye drops for a variety of purposes including for dry eyes. If you are not sure which one is best for you, we invite you to get in touch with our friendly customer service team, available to provide you with all the eye health guidance you may need.

Once you have ensured that your hands are clean and dry, either open your contact lens case or lift your contact lens from the new packet and place it on your index finger. Now you must ensure that your lens is in the right position and not inside out. The easiest way to do this is simply by closely looking at your lens while it is placed on your finger. If it resembles a soup or cereal bowl with flatter edges, then it is inside out. Otherwise, if it resembles half a ball, then it is in the right position. You are now ready to insert your lens.

  • Step 2

Step 2: Hold up your upper eyelid with your free hand, pull down your lower eyelid with the applying hand, and gently position the contact lens over your iris

Now that you are ready to insert your lens, use your free hand to hold up your upper eyelid. While the contact lens rests on your other index finger, use your middle and ring finger to pull down your lower eyelid. Place the contact lens gently on your iris.

  • Step 3

Step 3: Secure the contact lens in place by closing your eyes and blinking a few times

Once the contact lens is placed on your eye, look up, down, left, and right then gently yet firmly close your eyes. You may need to blink a few times to secure the contact lens comfortably in place.

  • Step 4

Step 4: Repeat steps 1 to 3 for the other eye

Repeat the previous steps for the other eye, including thoroughly washing and drying your hands.
