Busting the Myths around contact lenses

If you've never tried contact lenses before, the idea of putting something right against your eye can seem quite alien. That might be the reason that so many myths and false truths have built up around them, when in reality almost anyone who wears glasses can also benefit from using contact lenses.

Myth 1: They are way too complicated to use and look after.

While it might take a while to get the hang of putting in and taking out your lenses, you'll be surprised just how quick you become used to it. When you first get your prescription, the optician will show you exactly how to use your lenses, and can even go through how to keep your lenses clean or store them overnight. You'll usually even be given a free trial pair, so you can get used to wearing lenses before you make a purchase.

Myth 2: They are uncomfortable

Contact lenses are now designed with your comfort completely in mind. Your contact lens prescription is your guide to picking out the perfect lenses for your eyes, ensuring they are the exact right shape and size to fit perfectly against your eyeball. Your optician will also be able to point you in the right direction of a brand that will give your eyes the moisture and oxygen they need to stay healthy. But if you are having trouble with a set of lenses, you can always ask if they can suggest an alternative.

Myth 3: There are no contact lenses right for my eyes. eyes

No matter how strong or strange you might think your glasses prescription is, you can be almost certain there will be a contact lens prescription to match. Varifocal and Bifocal lenses are both available, as well as lenses which help clear up the vision of those with an astigmatism.

Myth 4: I'm too old/ too young for contact lenses.

There are absolutely no age limits when it comes to contact lenses. As long as you're capable enough to look after your lenses then you can feel free to give them a try. In fact, children as young as 8 years old have been known to regularly wear contact lenses with no issues at all.

As you get older you might find your eyes become a little dryer and your prescription begins to shift. Your optician will be able to advise you of lenses that will keep your eyes comfortable throughout the day, while still providing the clear and crisp vision you need.

Myth 5: Contact lenses are expensive.

Contact lenses don't have to be expensive. Great value monthly lenses can still offer you a comfortable experience without breaking the bank, they just need to be kept clean and stored properly overnight. Talk to your optician about your budget, they will be able to give you some idea of which lenses are both right for your eyes and firmly within your budget.
